TRIPLE SEAL 3000

DESCRIPTION:

Triple seal 3000 was formulated to overcome drawbacks of many conventional high temperature sealers for anodized aluminum that often produce undesirable smut or leached out and faded like appearance of the dyes. The three desirable features of Triple Seal 3000 are; Low temperature, smut free sealing and dye compatible constituents. In order to achieve these three desirable features of the new Triple Sealer 3000, operating conditions, such as pH, duration and temperature, should be maintained within specified limits, and solution concentration kept within recommended range and free from contamination.

Although high temperature sealing solutions provide good sealing quality, several problems result from the high temperatures applied. These problems include smut formation, brake down of some important constituents, frequent pH fluctuations and additions required to keep pH and buffer within specified range. Manual wiping of the work pieces may be needed in order to meet their aesthetic or decorative requirements, and sometimes they may need to send back for rework.

Following tables and paragraphs may be used as a guide to overcome most of the above outlined problems associated with conventional high temperature sealing solutions, when using lower temperature Triple Seal 3000 solutions.

Concentration and operating conditions:

Constituent Concentration pH range Temp Time/single seal Time/double seal
Sealer 3000 2-4 % by vol. 5.5 to 6.0 175-185 F. 10 to 20 min. 20 to 40 min.

NOTE: Single seal refers to Triple Seal 3000 only. Double seal refers to Triple Seal 3000 and D.I. Seal combined. For processing of work pieces specified in standards or specifications, follow instructions in order outlined. Clear anodizing is best sealed in the 1-2% by volume concentration range and colored or dyed in the range of 2-4 %. When both types are operated continuously, concentration between 2.5 and 3.5 % by volume should be adequate.

Troubleshooting Triple Seal 3000

PROBLEM CAUSE CORRECTION
Sealed but smutty parts. High pH, temp. or T.S. 3000 Check & drop pH/temp. or dilute bath.
No smut but etch or pit like surface. Low pH, contamination or both. Adjust pH, replenish part or whole bath.
Insufficient sealing. Low T.S. 3000, contamination. adjust T.S. 3000 concentrate.
Frequent pH change, faded dye. Low buffer/long time/high temp./low pH. Add 3-S de-smut, adjust time, temp. pH.

Chemical analysis control:

In 500 ml. Erlenmeyer flask, add approximately 190 ml. of distilled water and 100 ml. sample of Triple Seal 3000 process solution, swirl continuously to mix 25 ml. of concentrated ammonia and 20 ml. of 50% Triethanol amine and small amount of Murexide indicator. Titrate with 0.1 M EDTA to a stable magenta end point.

Calculation: ml. EDTA x 0.14=% by volume Triple Seal 3000.
