151 - AL Chromate Conversion Coating for Aluminum
DESCRIPTION:
Triple-s 151-AL is a chromate conversion coating for aluminum whose color ranges from deep gold to iridescent yellow depending on the alloy processed; furthermore, coating are unusually uniform.
UNUSUAL FEATURES:
- 151-AL produces an extremely uniform coating when compared with other conventional conversion coating of this type.
- 151-AL is less sensitive to variations in pH than most other conversion coating's and therefore it is easier to control.
- 151-AL operates successfully over a wider temperature range than most other comparable products.
- 151-AL provides greatly extended bath life with extremely low upkeep.
OPERATING CONDITIONS:
| Concentration: |
1-2 oz./gallon. |
| Temperature: |
80º to 100º F. |
| Time: |
1/2-3 minutes. Longer immersion times deepen the coating color but may not appreciably improve film characteristics in other respects. No agitation of work or bath is necessary. |
| pH: |
1.5 to 2.2 (1.8 OPT.) |
TYPICAL CHROMATE CONVERSION COATING LINE:
- Soak clean AC-220.
- Cold water rinse.
- Etch in ETCH-292.
- Cold water rinse.
- De-smut/deoxidize with DX-232 or DX-338-L Chromate free.
- Cold water rinse.
- Chromate conversion coat 151 - AL GOLD, 1 oz. per gallon at room temperature.
- Gold rinse water.
- Dry.
NOTE: When Triple-s AC-220 is used, work must be immersed in Deoxidizer for 1-2 minutes after cleaning prior to etching.
COLOR VARIANCES:
The color of the work processed by 151-AL varies from light yellow to deep buff, depending on the time of immersion. The longer the time, the deeper the color.
MAINTENANCE OF pH:
The optimum pH for 151-AL is 1.9 and solutions should be maintained as close as possible to this figure. If a satisfactory coating is not obtained, even though a titration shows the concentration of 151 AL to be corrected (up to 1.5 oz. per gallon), the pH of the solution may be too high. Nitric Acid then should be added to the bath in small increments until pH shows that the correct acidity has been reached or satisfactory coatings are again produced.
TANK CONSTRUCTION:
Stainless Steel (300 series) or Polyvinyl Chloride, Polyethylene, or Polypropylene lined mild steel tanks must be used for solutions of 151-AL. Unlined mild steel tanks are not satisfactory.
QUALITY CONTROL:
151-AL is manufactured under the most strict quality control standards. Only the number one grade of raw materials both in purity and in refinement are used in Triple-s Formulas and a retainer sample is kept for each product manufactured.
TOXICITY:
151-AL contains chromatic acid, which can cause burns, external ulcers and irritation of the nose. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Operators should use protective clothing, rubber gloves, apron, and chemical goggles. Proper ventilation is required while working.
SUGGESTED FIRST AID:
In case of contact with skin, immediately remove contaminated clothing and flush skin with water for 15 minutes. Obtain medical assistance. In the event that medical help is delayed, apply a magnesium paste (magnesium oxide and glycerin) to the exposed skin area. For eye contact, flush with a continuously flowing stream of water for at least 15 minutes and consult a physician without delay. Launder contaminated clothing before re-use.
PRECAUTION:
This is an oxidizing mixture containing chromium compound. Contact with combustible organic materials can cause fire.
